Wetzlar – Discover & Experience

Discover the cultural, lively and colourful Wetzlar with its medieval squares, impressive half-timbered houses, beautiful baroque buildings and the 700-year-old stone bridge over the River Lahn which characterise the town.

The cathedral is located in the centre of the town and was in construction for centuries but never completely finished. It is exactly this stylistic diversity which makes the cathedral unique.

Many narrow, romantic streets with small boutiques lure you into a shopping spree. The old town boasts several picturesque squares dating back to the Middle Ages, such as the Kornmarkt, Buttermarkt and Eisenmarkt. Today, they are filled with welcoming restaurants and cafés which also invite you to sit outside in the summer.

Inspired by a brilliant idea, Oskar Barnack created the world’s first 35mm camera in Wetzlar and consequently revolutionised photography. The ‘Viseum’ continues this tradition. Here, visitors can get a fascinating insight into the world of optics. The ‘Optikparcours’, leading visitors through the town centre, is the only one of its kind in Germany. Visitors will experience a life in complete darkness in the Dunkelkaufhaus in Wetzlar.

In 2014, the World of Leica was opened in the Spilburg area of Wetzlar. Not only are cameras produced here, but visitors can also get an insight into the production, see images by famous photographers and marvel at an exhibition of historical cameras.

In the middle of the newly built Leica Park, you’ll find our arcona LIVING ERNST LEITZ HOTEL, which offers you all these fascinating insights into the world of Leica in each individual room.
